Honda honors Damson dealership

When Jerry Damson decided to retire from his automotive business a few years ago and turn things over to his son and son-in-law, he didn't look back.

Things are still running smoothly today under the leadership of Deke Damson and Butch Park.

"He knows what's going on, but he's sat back and let us make our own decisions and learn on our own,'' said Park, who married Damson's daughter, Susan.

Jerry Damson got into the car business in Huntsville in 1961, selling used cars on Meridian Street, according to Deke Damson. Today, the Damsons run Honda dealerships in Huntsville, Decatur and Florence. They also have the Acura dealership in Huntsville and a Nissan dealership in Florence.

The Honda dealership in Huntsville was honored Thursday with the automaker's President's Award, presented by Honda representatives. The award is given to dealerships that meet a number of criteria. This year's award marks the fifth time the dealership has won the award since Jerry Damson retired.

"It's something we take pride in because it shows the way the dealership overall is run as a business,'' Deke Damson said. "It takes into consideration sales, service, customer satisfaction - every department and employee has an impact.''

The Honda dealership on Bob Wallace Avenue has about 155 employees.

Deke Damson said the dealership continues to try to go by the same standards set by his father.

"He had a lot of faith and a happy family life that allowed him to work long hours,'' he said. "He knew he had to have happy employees to have happy customers. From day one, the slogan on the back of his cars was 'Satisfaction,' and that's still our motto today. He was always known for standing behind what he sold, and we still do that.''

Deke Damson started working with the dealership full-time in 1982. "I was never pushed into it. I just always felt like it was what I wanted to do.''

He said the car business has changed during the past 25 years.

"With the Internet, the customer is much more educated on the product today,'' he said. "They know what they should pay, what the dealer paid and what they should get for their trade-in.''
